Listening Activity on Colors

General Objective:

To help children improve their listening skills while learning to identify and recognize colors in English.

Listening and Identifying Colors

Step 1: Play an audio recording where you say a color (or use a teacher's voice if you're doing this live).

Step 2: The children should listen to the color name in the recording and then hold up the correct flashcard or image of the object of that color.

Color Listening Challenge

Step 1: Give a series of color-related instructions for the children to follow.

Step 2: The children will listen to the instructions and follow them by pointing to objects in the room, drawing, or coloring as instructed.

Color Listening Quiz

Step 1: After reviewing the colors, play a short quiz where you say the name of the color and the children have to respond by raising their hand or showing a flashcard.

Example quiz:

  • Teacher (audio): “What color is the apple?”

  • Children respond: “Red!”

  • Teacher (audio): “What color is the sky?”

  • Children respond: “Blue!”

Step 2: Alternatively, you can make it a "True or False" activity where you say something and the children have to decide if it's correct or not.

Example:

  • Teacher (audio): “The grass is red.” (Children say "no")
  • Teacher (audio): “The sun is yellow.” (Children say "yes")

Objective: To improve listening comprehension and reinforce color vocabulary.

Colors and Their Names

Step 1: Introduce the colors in English using flashcards or images.

Example:

  • Red – A red heart.
  • Blue – A blue sky.
  • Yellow – A yellow sun.
  • Green – A green leaf.
  • Orange – An orange.
  • Pink – A pink cake.

Step 2: Have the children repeat each color aloud, encouraging them to mimic the pronunciation.

Objective: To learn the basic colors and their names in English.

Draw and Color

Step 1: Give the children a simple picture to color (it could be a house, tree, animal, etc.).

Step 2: Ask the children to color the picture using the colors in English they’ve learned (for example, “Color the house yellow” or “Color the tree green”).

Objective: To reinforce color learning while practicing writing and visual recognition.

Colors Song

Step 1: Teach the children a simple song about colors in English. Here is an example:

🎶Red, red, what do you see?
I see a red apple looking at me.
Blue, blue, what do you see?
I see a blue sky looking at me

Blue, blue, what do you see?
I see a blue sky looking at me...
🎶

Step 2: The children can sing along and point to objects of the color mentioned as they sing.

Objective: To learn colors in a fun, musical way that helps with memorization.
