"Colors in Music and Sound: Listening to the Invisible"

Listening Activity on Colors

General Objective:

To help children improve their listening skills while learning to identify and recognize colors in English.

Listening and Identifying Colors

Step 1: Play an audio recording where you say a color (or use a teacher's voice if you're doing this live).

Step 2: The children should listen to the color name in the recording and then hold up the correct flashcard or image of the object of that color.

Color Listening Challenge

Step 1: Give a series of color-related instructions for the children to follow.

Step 2: The children will listen to the instructions and follow them by pointing to objects in the room, drawing, or coloring as instructed.

Color Listening Quiz

Step 1: After reviewing the colors, play a short quiz where you say the name of the color and the children have to respond by raising their hand or showing a flashcard.

Example quiz:

  • Teacher (audio): “What color is the apple?”

  • Children respond: “Red!”

  • Teacher (audio): “What color is the sky?”

  • Children respond: “Blue!”

Step 2: Alternatively, you can make it a "True or False" activity where you say something and the children have to decide if it's correct or not.

Example:

  • Teacher (audio): “The grass is red.” (Children say "no")
  • Teacher (audio): “The sun is yellow.” (Children say "yes")

Colors and Their Names

Step 1: Introduce the colors in English using flashcards or images.

Example:

Writing Class: Colors in Language

Objectives:

  • Develop descriptive writing skills using color vocabulary.
  • Explore how colors affect our emotions and perceptions.
  • Improve the ability to use metaphors and comparisons in writing.

Color Vocabulary and Associations

  • Objective: Expand color vocabulary and explore the connotations of colors.

    • Distribute a list of common colors, such as red, yellow, blue, green, purple, orange, black, white, pink, gray, etc.

    • Have students associate each color with words or concepts that come to mind. For example:

      • Red: love, passion, fire, danger.
      • Blue: calm, sky, sadness, serenity.
      • Yellow: sun, happiness, heat, summer.
      • Green: nature, hope, freshness, tranquility.

    • Afterward, invite students to share their associations and discuss how these colors may have different meanings depending on culture or context.

Writing a Short Essay

  • Objective: Use colors as tools to express a deeper or more abstract idea.

    • Suggest that students write a short essay on a topic in which colors play an important role. Some ideas could include:

      • What color represents your personality and why?
      • Describe a perfect day using colors.
      • How do colors influence your mood or decisions?
      • Write a short story where the colors are the main characters

Homework 

  • My students, you are going to complete a longer description or write a story where each chapter is associated with a specific color (for example, one chapter could be red, another blue, etc.).

1. Introduction 

Warm-up Activity
I am going to being with a conversation where I am going to ask students about their favorite colors:

  • "What's your favorite color?"
  • "Do you like bright colors or dark colors?"

This will help to get to know their preferences and begin to introduce colors naturally.

Vocabulary Introduction
Display a list of basic colors in English on a slide or shared document, ensuring everyone can see the color names and pronunciations.
